from Sunday 1 to Saturday 14 July 2018
Yet another PTG Tours visit to Alaska started with a BA A380 flight to Vancouver for one short night in town. We took Amtrak to Seattle next morning for a one night and then an evening flight north to Fairbanks. A tourist day in the far north with a visit to the Fountainhead Car museum and then Pioneer Park where Porter #1 steam loco was in operation as it was 4 July. Next day we took "Denali Star" for our long luxurious ride south to Anchorage via Denali and Talkeetna. The next two days were days trips to Whittier / Spencer Glacier / Grandview and then Seward, with cruises available each day. The Sunday saw us fly to Juneau where we stopped off at the Salmon Hatchery as this is an excellent place to see Bald Eagles. Next morning we had to revert to catamaran power as the "Columbia" was out of service after a small engine room fire to get us to Skagway. We had four nights in this incredible magical town, rail activities included a short run into Ore Dock, an all day round trip to Carcross and a Summit Excursion with triple Alco power, a real highlight for the diesel fans! Thankfully a nice close up view of a young bear with quite a few getting a photo in the process! The final day was train 23 to Fraser and then bus to Whitehorse for one night and then flights home via Vancouver, a few of us had a few hours there so went into town and took the Seabus over to Lonsdale Quay for some lunch. The usual exhausting flight back over the Atlantic and a big dose of jet lag!
